For many of us hitting the gym a few times a week, getting adequate sleep and eating our high protein healthy SIXPAX meals covers at least the foundations of a healthy lifestyle. But do we ever stop to think about why we do these things? Beyond the obvious; To look and feel good?
In what ways does maintaining a healthy lifestyle benefit our overall body and well-being?
In todays blog we look at the various ways in which we contribute to the optimisation of body function from mental and emotional well-being, to heart health, being free from increasingly common diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and depression. As well as maximising energy and productivity.
So yes, we can look and feel on point but what else is bubbling below the surface that we didn’t even know was there?!
Maintenance of weight
Eating the correct amount of carbs, fats, proteins and calories per day for your body type, lifestyle and activity level. Will ensure the stabilisation, balance and control of your weight. Remember expenditure needs to equal consumption for a balance. If you are after weight loss/ leaning out, expenditure needs to exceed consumption. Simply put, whatever you eat needs to be equal to the amount of energy you have expended/calories you have burned that day or be less than the amount of calories burned per day. Here is where your healthy eating eg calories regulation, macro observation combines with a regular exercise program and an active lifestyle. For those of you with an office based job your calorie expenditure for day-to-day functionality is likely to be less than those of you working on your feet. So, the importance of commitment to regular exercise is required that little bit more!
The maintenance of a healthy weight that is suitable for your body type and lifestyle will benefit not only your confidence and mental well-being; looking and feeling good. But equally as importantly will optimise the functionality of body operation eg your heart, hormone balance, lungs, joints, muscles etc. When the body is operating below or above its optimum weight these functions can be impaired. Emphasising the importance of weight maintenance for your all -round health and well-being even more.
We all like to be on point and in a good mood, although sometimes the opposite cannot be helped, a healthy lifestyle with good food and activity certainly allows us to promote the happiness and joy! Binging on food that is high in fat and sugar not only makes us feel bad about ourselves and lethargic, it also encourages us to do less; More Netflix and less in the gym! Which over a long period of time, has the potential to bring our moods down.
Exercise and activity is bang on to produce endorphins in the brain. That leave you happier and feeling more relaxed. When you feel good your mood is enhanced and maintained so exercising and eating nourishing foods all have a benefit to your mental and emotional well-being, self confidence and happiness. All of which lead to decreased stress, a calmer mindset and improved cognitive function. And encourage you to want to maintain that healthy and nourishing balance. Start/ continue looking after your health and those endorphins will naturally encourage you to want to do it more!!!
Strengthens immune system
The nutrients contained in vegetables, lean meats and fish, pulses, fruit and nuts help to fuel and develop the immune system and to optimise its function. Additionally, sleeping well, eating well and exercising regularly all help to prevent common conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. As well as diabetes, depression and arthritis.
Those of you that hit the gym regularly and keep your macros on point will also have noticed how much faster you are able to recover when suffering from a common cold or fatigue. As the body is already conditioned and pre- prepared to fight these. Due to the long- term ground work put in by you, the remainder of the time.
As with mood, we all like to feel full of energy and ready to accomplish anything we set our minds to. Below is a list of food groups that we would all benefit from having in our diet, that serve as energy boosters:
Fruit and vegetables
Lean meat and fish
In the correct quantities for your lifestyle, the groups above provide the body with the fuel and energy it needs. Allowing the body to function optimally and giving you the energy and vibrancy required to complete the tasks in your day.
As many of you lovely SIXPAX(ers) already do, maintaining a consistent exercise program is key to boosting energy; improvement in muscular strength and total body endurance enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body. Helping everything to be more vibrant and efficient and giving you more energy!
Sleeping well to restore and rest the body and mind is also an important need for the body to be full of energy. Inadequate sleep – which is being emphasised now more than ever – can dampen cognitive function, increase fatigue and irritation and impede the day to day work of the body.
With you feeling and looking great, free of disease/injury, happy and full of energy there is no doubt that you will be maximising your productivity and achieving the goals you set for yourself daily.
Train hard, stay strong!
