Do you hit it hard in the gym? Eat clean and wholesome meals? Successfully snack? Don’t over eat? But still find you suffer with being bloated?
It can be a pretty frustrating issue! Especially if you have tried the obvious and eliminated gluten from your diet and not had much success! However there are other nutrients that have been identified to cause bloating. Studies have shown these foods to be high in FODMAP!
FODMAP is abbreviated for ‘Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharide’s and Polyols.’ Which have been said to be highly fermentable in the stomach – this fermentation can be the dominant cause of chronic bloating! FODMAP ‘s are short chain carbohydrate molecules common in a variety of foods. The foods they are found in are not always 'bad' for you (eg high in sugar or fat’ hence why you can be eating well, being healthy and still be bloated!) but they can cause digestive issues due to being poorly absorbed in the small intestine. These foods will also enter the large intestine to be fermented by natural bacteria that live in our gut. The fermentation has been identified to result in the production of gas resulting in your bloated stomach!!! A reduction in foods high in FODMAP have been claimed to reduce the bloating and gassy symptoms.
Earlier this week we shared with you a video of three doctors discussing what is the best diet for optimum health (check this out here if you are yet to view it) and amongst all their different opinions one thing was consistent; their belief in every individual’s body having slightly different requirements. So, if you do suffer from chronic bloating, check out the list below for foods that could possibly be the cause of your on-going discomfort. But do bear in mind that everybody is different and it is best to see what sits most suitably for you and your physiology!
Milk and Yogurt
To have a look at exactly what happens in your digestive system following the consumption of these foods, please check out this video from Monash University.
Wishing you all a bloated free weekend :)
