With the new and exciting classic physique category being brought to the forefront of the bodybuilding stage, now more than ever, people are chasing those classic lines and physiques that were made so popular by the bodybuilders from the golden era.
With this being a huge step in the right direction we stand to see more pleasing, symmetrical and artistic physiques coming up through the ranks.
But there is one thing on my mind and the minds of many; why don't the "classic physiques" of today look as good, or even similar, to the ones of the guys back in the 70s and 80s?
Nutrition, lifestyle and mind set are a few reasons that spring to mind, but one stands out to me the most:
With the lack of intricate hammer strength and hoist machines back in the day, the emphasis was forced upon the basics and doing them right.
Amongst some of the many forgotten exercises, one reigns supreme in my eyes:
The Dumbbell Pullover
Name the last time you saw someone do or even attempt this exercise. The reason for that is because it's hard, uncomfortable and not as fun as the bench press. But doing this exercise 1-3 times a week is going to make the world of difference to your physique. They swore by it and so should you!
The benefits are simple and contribute to creating a well-balanced structure. The pullover helps expand the rib cage lifting your chest up higher and almost putting it on a pedestal. We all know those outstanding pictures of Arnold hitting the side chest pose, where his pecs look like they are about to take off - yep you guessed it, pullovers helped to create that.
The stretch you get throughout the chest when executing the exercise is again commonly overlooked and contributes to a unique chest development that will separate you from the crowd. Not to mention the direct lat activation you get from it helping to build thickness and width throughout the back.
The benefits of this lost gem are endless, but one body part that it is renowned to bring up is the serratus (the boxers muscle). Once developed it helps tie in the lats and chest seamlessly creating a physique worthy of the Gods.
But no exercise comes without risk. The pullover can put your shoulder in a compromised position, not to mention the dangerous position of the dumbbell hanging over your face, so like any exercise, correct form is mandatory. Do your research first before performing the exercise and don’t just grab the biggest dumbbell at the bottom of the rack.
Let’s bring the real old school physiques back, one step at a time and create an industry you are proud to be a part of!
